I would be lost without it. I drive a lot for work and I can't imagine walking or roller blading to all these places. It's just not possible for me to take a train or bus--too long of a waiting pattern-I'm on deadline here so it's a must that I have a car.

3. I commute 23 miles each way |
|
A 35-40 minute car ride.
I'm not even sure there's a way to get from my home to my work via public transit. If there is, it involves at least three bus transfers. I think I can get on the bus at the stop by my house, and take that to the Waukesha terminal, then transfer to a bus that goes to the Waukesha-Milwaukee county line transfer point (the mall). Then, take that bus to somewhere in the city of Milwaukee where there's a transfer point to a route that'll take me to the Glendale industrial park where I work. That would probably be a couple of hours.

I do sometimes use my car. But rarely within NYC.

Unfortunately, when I went to Europe, all I could visit were Munich (not such a great city, if you ask me - but there was this awesome accordian street musician playing near the Glockenspiel. Try to find THAT in an American city! :D), Vienna (a wonderful city), Venice (ugh), and Kitzbühel (great skiing). Oh yeah, we went to this dumpy little lake town called Gmunden, and all I got was a Pizza Margherita (which was pretty good I guess).
All in all, it was pretty cool, but mostly Austrian. Some day I'd love to go back and tour (Oder vielleicht soll ich in Deutschland wohnen. Ich spreche genug Deutsch) Germany. Especially Düsseldorf (home of the richest homeless persons in the world, according to my German teacher) and Berlin.

7. "America's Best Transit System" |
|
so named by the American Public Transit Assn. twice within the last decade.
If that is the case, I feel really, really bad for transit riders on the mainland (though my own situation has improved somewhat since I moved right on to one of the CityExpress! lines). You name it: half-hour waits followed by three buses at once, back doors stuck open forcing the driver to actually go back there and pull it shut, less than generous scheduling (two of my old routes, in a neighborhood full of high-rise apartments, came every 50 minutes midday, evening and weekend, whether you needed one or not). Aargh. It's almost enough to make take my life (and others'!) into my hands by biting the driving bullet.

12. Here in Minneapolis, I'm tri-modal |
|
1. Feet whenever possible
2. Bus, if possible, when it's too far for feet to cover in a reasonable time
3. Car as a last resort, when the bus schedule isn't convenient or I'm going to the burbs to visit my relatives.

and I love it! It's got rich corinthian leather seats and all of the other bells and whistles. I feel like I'm riding/driving in the lap of luxury especially after selling my ex-husband my old 95 Pontiac Grand Am. (no bells and whistles, a/c broken, needed brake job, had radiator leak, blah, blah, blah but he knew all of that when he bought it from me.)
