anyone have comments re: Broadband phone service (Vonage)
For 20 bucks a month I can get rid of my land line. Sounds like a good deal. Anyone got the skinny on these services?

1. I have had Vonage for over a year now...
I am very pleased with the service and the value. I have the residential unlimited service for $29.95 and that covers all calls 24/7 to anywhere in the US/Canada. And, being an internet service, there are no tacked on fees, taxes, etc. And, it includes stuff like CallerID w/name, Voice Mail, Call waiting, 3way calling, and Call Forwarding...all of which would cost more with the "phone company".

The only potential drawback is that the service is depenent on your broadband connection. To circumvent outages (power outages, BB outage) they provide for alternative number forwarding. So if the power goes out, all incoming calls forward automatically to a number of my choosing...in my case, my cell phone.

Overall, very happy. Email via the link if you have specific questions.

4. great!
It seems as though there is a smalll chance of "hidden" problems. I also worry about security as it would be easy to tap into a web conversation.

But as a daily usage line it seems to be a good idea.

I appreciate the comments.

2. Broadband is okay. Faster than land line. 20 bucks is cheap.

3. Broadvox Direct is very good too
with similar rates and a new device in beta that transparently goes between your router and cable/dsl modem and has tons of features including priority to phone calls so there are no dropouts even when you are using the internet connection to the max. Good rate too.
