You have to go to a post office that does expidited passports and pay out the ass. Try starting here: http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html

They will take your picture and expedite your application in one fell swoop. If you have your expired passport, they can turn it around even faster. Take your travel itennary, airline ticket schedule etc.
It costs $85 to re up your passport, $15 to take pix, $30 for overnight shipping and $60 to expedite.
I didn't even still have my expired passport and got it in less than a week.
