June 23, 1973...
a day which I shall NEVER forget! At this very hour, the lights were being dimmed to near darkness at Olympia Stadium in Detroit...the synthesizer was beginning to roar...the dry ice filled the stage in a complete fog cover...on came the dark blue light from above the stage, reflecting off the dry ice cloud...the cloud dissipated and there they were...right in front of me and 20,000 others...opening this monster show in this grand old stadium which was to last 3 hours with the lead song off of the previous years album "Obscurred By Clouds"...the greatest band of all time...PINK FLOYD!
This was the tour to promote "Dark Side of the Moon"...and the entire show was performed with razor sharp accuracy! I have yet to see that particular concert be outdone, and since I have grown old and nolonger attend stadium shows (trust me...I saw my share) I guess I never will! LONG LIVE THE FLOYD!! :bounce:

1. How much of a 'fog' were you in?
If you catch my drift.

2. I knew someone would want to know the particulars...
a fog that was about as heavy as what the dry ice was putting forth!

Seemed like a kick ass show! I guess those were the good ole' days for you.

Of today's music, who do you think has talent?

9. Well...I no longer listen to any rock music...
avante-garde or otherwise! I've taken the high road and migrated to smooth jazz...of which Rick Derringer, Jonathan Cain, and Danny Federici have done also! It's very good in it's own way! Give this a try sometime http://www.smoothjazz.com It is broadcast from Monterey Bay, California 24/7 over the web, so be sure you have your media player working! The station supports all media players...though I'm biased toward Winamp!

5. Thirty one years later and I can STILL tell you...
what was played and in what order. As I do every year on this day, I'm loadin' up the bong, loadin' up the cd player with all Floyd...and I'm gonna once again be back at grand old Olympia Stadium...though she not be there any more (tore down about 10 years ago).

10. A bunch of us used to provide concert security,
and we did the Floyd concert at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Usually, we'd show up a couple hours before the show, and stay until the band left, but this was "something completely different"

We were called to be there the night before the show, because the contract with the band somehow allowed non union people to set up staging and other things. We built a scaffolding tower and braced it, which was where the huge movie projector stood to project onto the huge round screen above the stage. I remember the forklift was about 6" too short, so we lifted it from there. In hindsight, this was incredibly stupid- about 30 feet up. We did a bunch of other setup, but I don't have nearly as clear a recall of that. (heh, heh) When we finished, I climbed way up in the stadium and slept.

The show was incredible. I had seniority, so I got to choose where I worked. Normally, I chose the lead dressing room, but for this one, I just had to be on the sound mixing platform in the hall. This was the choicest seat in the house, with the best sound and view. To this day, if asked, why, of course I was watching the crowd. Not! The show was incredible- with the crashing airplane, the light show movie, and the huge helium pyramid floating above the stadium- bathed continually with spotlights.

All was as phenomenal as you could imagine, except for the pyramid. Somehow, it broke, and this big, amorphous balloon of helium went sailing off into space. the follow spots followed it out of sight, and the other parts of it floated down over the edge of the stadium.

This one night was better than all of the other 50 - 75 shows I worked- with the possible exception of David Bowie in a 2500 seat hall- on his first big tour.

13. Musta been Floyd's last tour...
1994! I saw that in Indianapolis in 1994 at the Hoosier Dome...and though that show too was phenomenal...it didn't come close to the '73 show. Of course the '73 show included Roger Waters...who departed the band on bad terms in 1987!

17. Then YOU of all people...
KNOW exactly what I'm talking about! I don't know alot of people personally who got to see that show and it's neat to run into someone else who understands what I mean! I tried to get tix to the show in Chicago that year (they played 4 nights there and ALL were sold out) and had to settle for driving a little further and it was well worth it! Ticket price...$5.00...and I still have my ticket stub! :headbang:

19. I'm still smiling, as well.
My daughter is going to see Dave Matthews Sunday, and is paying $ 46.00 for a LAWN ticket. No wonder the big concert tours aren't selling. Lollapalooza just cancelled the whole tour.

21. In '72 I paid...
$4.50 to see Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac (not the current version either, Bob Welch and Danny Kirwan were still with them), and Dick Heckstall-Smith!
Deep Purple was the headliner, and Fleetwood Mac...the old version, mind you...blew them away!

prevented a reunion, of any kind. both guys are doing ok, but neither can equal their band together, imho.

15. Can't find Floyd, argh.
I know I saw it just a while ago... but the dotter may have taken it with her on her road trip out west from centre canada. She's 19 and likes some old stuff. Was totally emoroured with Zep for quite some time and actually had me appreciating them more now than back when. and Creedence.

but I did find a thought lost Deep Forrest album and a Final Fantasy VIII vid game.
