Nature question
One of the cats left a trophy outside the back door this morning.

It's about the size of a chipmunk, but is gray with the bushy tail of a squirrel. I don't think it's a baby squirrel because it's face isn't squirrelish.

Any ideas?

6. perhaps a flying squirrel?
they look a bit different. Is there webbed skin between legs? Can't imagine much else from Mass.

7. It sounds like a flying squirrel....
which would also have the loose skin going from front to back on each side near the legs. They look differenr in part because they are actually one of the subfamilies of ground squirrels. The adults are about 9 inches long. Being caught at night would support the idea of it being a flying squirrel.

Other than the color, it sounded like it could also have been one of the more common tree squirrel, the 12-inch red squirrel. Its hair is a chestnut brown-to-reddish, however, and not gray.

I hear they walk in twos, much like a culinary Pink Floyd...

17. got a problem with songbirds & other small critters?
If your cat stays on your property I guess that's ok if you value your cat's cheap thrills over wildlife. But we know that cats don't work like that. Cats are an invasive species and a peril to small wildlife. Dogs can be a problem too, but they are generally kept in yards.

22. no threat
mere statement of opinion. I do not tolerate felis domesticus on my property. You seem to feel that it's ok for your cat to free range in pursuit of sport. We would not get along.
