Recalling his 20 years playing rugby, a Little Village priest Wednesday chased down a man who allegedly tried to rob the church's donation box and held him until police arrived.
Matt Foley, pastor of St. Agnes Church, 2651 S. Central Park Ave., didn't hesitate about 1 p.m. when someone noticed on a security television that two men were breaking into the box with a crowbar and a pair of lock cutters. Foley ran out of his rectory office and confronted them.
"I didn't say a lot," he said. "I grabbed the tools. I wasn't going to let them take the evidence."
While one of the men simply watched, Foley scuffled with the other, who kept reaching for a knife in a pouch attached to his waist, Foley said. The man then broke away and Foley chased him into an alley a half block away, where he tackled him.
"Just like I used to do on the rugby field," Foley said.
