7. wow difficult decision |

I've only seen Total Recall and Basic Instinct. I guess if the others are that hilarious, I have to see them sometime. Anyway I gave the nod to Basic Instinct. If that isn't over the top cheese, what is.

Trashiest, campy, and silly. So bad it was hilarious!
The graphic sex and nudity added to the fun.
I actually liked "Total Recall". The plot was low-rent Hitchcock.
You forgot "Robocop". Fun, yet over the top.

How many people watched that film and didn't realize that it was also brilliantly satirical?
"I'd buy that for a dollar! Ha Ha Ha Ha!"

12. All Verhoeven's movies are satires |
|
but some work, and some don't. Total Recall works because of the source material (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, which was a great story). Starship Troopers doesn't work because of its contempt for the source material.

11. Showgirls is so vapid |
|
that it doesn't even work as gratuitous porn. My husband tried renting it once when I was out of town, and it was so bad, he ended up turning it off in disgust. Now, a skin flick has to be pretty lame for him to turn it off.
There's periodically an "Annotated Showgirls" program locally, where a local writer deconstructs the movie during a showing of it, a la MST3K. It's hilarious.
