Howard Berg, the world's fastest reader, uses the hand technique. I've been trying this lately, but I'm not sure if I've increased my reading speed by doing this.

1. None
I just use my eyes. I read fairly fast though. Your speed can increase with practice, but it is more about the ability to soak in what you read.

2. I do if I'm reading aloud
If I'm reading to myself, I can see -- and read and understand -- the whole page at once. It's kind of neat. I'm damn fast -- I got through all but 100 pages of Harry Potter V on a nonstop flight from LA to Milwaukee (I would have gotten through the whole thing, but I slept for a bit).

But it's hard for me to read aloud, because then I have to focus word by word. So I use a pen if I can, my finger otherwise.
