Link between Jazz and Progressive Rock? |
I ask because both forms of music call for some improvisation and and the music can get lengthy and intricate and call for some technical skill. Many prog rockers cite jazz musicians as influcences. For example, John Petrucci of Dream Theater, a Progressive Rock band, likes Al DeMoella, a jazz guitarist. So would you say that there is a big jazz influence on Progressive Rock?

I can easily see jazz influences in Rush, Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree.

3. I am not familiar with Porcupine Tree. |
I am listening to soundbites now. They sound like they have more of an atmospheric sound as opposed to metallic or rock like Rush and Dream Theater have.

4. Wrong soundbites, then. :) |
It also depends on the album. "In Absentia" has some REALLY heavy stuff on there, as well as the atmospheric stuff, some acoustic singer-songwriter sort of things, and some great 3-4 part harmonies. Steven Wilson has recently been influenced by things going on in progressive metal, and he's brought it into Porcupine Tree.

5. There are three albums of soundbytes. |
I listened to stuff from "The Sky Moves Sideways" and "Signify" and now, I am listening to "In Absentia" soundbytes. I am starting to see what you mean. THe first two are more like Floyd and Radiohead and it seems like this one is different from the other two.
