I don't think I've ever posted on the lounge. I am usually on General Discussion.

I used to go to another website with forums that were wonderful and not necessarily all liberal but a good mix. Debates, vanity posts, it was wonderful. I posted with those people since early 2000.

But last night I posted about what it was like to see Moore's film and one of them basically said he was all insulted by what I said and to shut the fuck up. That is NOT standard operating procedure for that place. The kicker is the guy owns the site. He doesn't kick anyone off and wouldn't do that to me, but I asked him to cancel my account. I also stopped supporting them monetarily, which means I'll have some money to throw DU's way now.

I get enough of the sit down and shut up message in real life concerning my beliefs. I didn't need it there, too.

Anyway. Just wanted to dip my toe in here. Oh loads of other posters said they disagreed that they wanted to hear about the film, but they were roundly ignored. I told them about this place.

I'm sorry your were told to "shut the fuck up" just for sharing your thoughts on a movie. That's pretty harsh.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts though. It's an incredible movie for many reasons, but I find it very facinating how different people react to it. Love it or hate it, believe it or disbelieve it...the movie will affect you.

But all political persuasions were represented, and I got tired of arguing with freeper-types and fundies. I finally realized that I was either preaching to the choir or casting my pearls before swine. Those people can't be reasoned with, so I decided to quit wasting my time there.

I can be contentious, but I've never gotten into what I consider an argument at DU. At least all the regulars share my core values, so I don't anticipate getting into any knock-down-drag-outs.

On edit: I don't prefer any DU forum over any other. I usually go straight to 'latest posts' and sift through everything. I can still see 'late-breaking news' in the right-hand column, so I don't miss a thing :grouphug:

I know how you feel. I belonged to a Canadian forum for a couple years. 1 of them was kind of a jerk, but the rest I always got along with.

reprehensor and I met some of the folks when we were in Toronto in October. Things really started changing when a local (from MY AREA!!) got on and started bringing all his stupid, Bush-loving, conservative bullshit rhetoric with him.

He'd rile me up, and I'd fire back. One day, one of the guys that I'd met and really liked jumped on me for jumping on him. That was the beginning of the end. One of the Americans, whom I'd also met and basically liked, said she was going to vote for Nader "because she had to follow her convictions."

Whatever.

I'm still in touch with about 3 of the people I was really good friends with, but only through e-mail. I don't go back any more.

The lounge is LOTS of fun! Hang out here wid' us!
