Rest in Peace, Grampy Jack: a vets dying words |
|
The father of our nanny, who has watched our 3 children since they were babies, passed away yesterday. Jack Mannix (I always thought that was a cool name) was a hard-headed son of a goat, irascible and pugnacious, all the adults called him grumpy jack. But he was good to the kids and they loved him. They knew him more than they do their own grandparents. They went to say their good-byes, as he requested, day before last.
He volunteered for WWII, lied about his age, and served with the 139th battlion, Seabees, on Okinawa. He 'prolly saw things at age 18 that many will never see (unless your in Iraq now,I guess).
He had a hard time at the end, the ravages of a case a beer and 2 packs of Camels a day on his body and soul. His youngest daughter picked him up from where he fell out of the hospital bed. His last words were:
"I dont know what to do"
