Denver Post liked my book
Which is particularly nice, given that almost all other reviewers have ignored it (sniffle):

I've got the cover and sample chapters on my Web site:

2. You're that guy who wrote about the benefits of being unemployed.

I didn't know that you posted here. I did read that and it was loud and clear that you did not like Bush. Not that I could blame you. I feel exactly the same way. A friend actually gave me a link to your site last October. I thought it was funny and accurate.

9. Right, I'm the unemployment guy
That essay got Slashdotted. The page got hundreds of thousands hits, and I got hundreds of e-mails, many of them from other unemployed people all over the world. Almost all the e-mails were supportive and anti-Bush.

I wrote the essay and put it on my Web site in order to vent and to entertain people, but it ended up giving me a real emotional lift because of the wonderful e-mails I got. It was quite an experience.

In case anyone's interested, it's at

6. Congrats!
By the way, I have read and enjoyed all three of your Trek novels. Did you get any compensation when they blatantly ripped off "Timetrap" to make that TNG episode where Riker has "amnesia?" I thought of your book (and therefore guessed THEIR ending) in the first five minutes!

10. Paperboys, nope, not a cent
The contracts for Star Trek books specify that the books are works for hire, all rights owned by Paramount, so the author doesn't get any extra money if they use the book for a TV episode or even a movie. For that matter, I don't even get royalties for foreign sales of the books, which are pretty healthy.

On the other hand, the up-front money and royalties for U.S. sales are much better than for other works for hire, media tie-ins. Or at least, they were back when I was doing those ST books. I gather they're not quite so generous nowadays.

Confession: I stole the idea for Timetrap from an old Blackhawks comic book I read when I was a teenager. And then later I discovered that they stole the idea from a movie starring James Garner, made in the mid-1950s. So it's kinda like a long line of, er, plot inspirations.

11. Going, well, acaudill
I'm employed -- for the moment, anyway. My wife's happy with her own business. Our son's deciding where to go for his Ph.D. Real life moves along.
