Favorite Joni Mitchell song...............
I have to admit I'm in love with Joni Mitchell. Her voice is elegant, her songwriting creates such imagery, she's an excellent guitar player and she's Canadian (I can't help it, I have a soft spot for the Canadian ladies :loveya: ).

My favorite would have to be "Free Man in Paris." It kinda typifies where I would like my life to be at this point: "unfettered and alive."

You?

1. You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio
My favourite Joni wisdom:

I know you don't like weak women
You get bored so quick
And you don't like strong women
'Cause they're hip to your tricks

.....ain't that the truth? :-)

DemEx

I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
I’m going on down to yasgur’s farm
I’m going to join in a rock ’n’ roll band
I’m going to camp out on the land
I’m going to try an’ get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it’s the time of man
I don’t know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil’s bargain
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

9. Amelia, no...A Case of You...no...Blue...
How do you pick just one???

I'm a Joni fanatic! I learned to play guitar with those wonderful open tunings because of her!

Foamdad and others: Don't miss the excellent documentary called "Woman of Heart and Mind." It is available on DVD. There are amazing interviews and great concert footage from her entire career!

You can get it at amazon.

10. Thanks for the tip..............
I love open tunings. However, I am so hard wired in the EADGBE thing, that its hard for me to really play anything other than barring the whole neck for a chord.

11. I hate standard tuning!
I feel like my guitar isn't in tune when it's in standard.

try this first- just drop your low E to a D and play around- Your "D" chord will never sound better.

Several Joni songbooks are very complete with the tunings and chord voicings. Go find one and play around. You will start to hear the patterns she uses over and over and be able to figure out her songs yourself.

Well at least that what I did.

20. A Case of You (Canada)
Edited on Sun Jun-27-04 05:44 PM by jdolsen
Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constant in the darkness
Where’s that at?
If you want me I’ll be in the bar

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue tv screen light
I drew a map of canada
Oh canada
And your face sketched on it twice

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I’d still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I’m frightened by the devil
And I’m drawn to those ones that ain’t afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
Love is touching souls
Surely you touched mine
Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
And you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I’d be on my feet
And still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
Color go to him, stay with him if you can
Oh but be prepared to bleed
Oh but you are in my blood you’re my holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I’d be on my feet
I’d still be on my feet

Mmmmmmm

too tough to choose though ...

maybe "For Free", "Blue", "Chelsea Morning", "Woodstock", "Carey" ... or maybe even "Song to a Seagull" ...

i know she hates to hear it but i really did prefer her earlier folk stuff to her jazz thing ...

great line from Willy: "but you're bound to lose if you let the blues get you scared to feel ..."

32. This is so weird
I just bought "Shadows and Light" Friday night on DVD.

The greatest back up band in history for a live show.

Joni (of course) guitars and vocals
Pat Metheny guitars
Lyle Mays keyboards
JACO PASTORIOUS Bass
Micheal Brecker Sax
Don Elias Percussion
The Persuasions special guests

Favorite song?

Amelia

I looked up and spotted six jet planes
Leaving six trails in the sky
It was the hexagram of the heavens
It was the strings of this guitar
Amelia, it was just a false alarm"...

41. California
Here are the lyrics (and I love everything by Joni Mitchell).

Sitting in a park in paris, france
Reading the news and it sure looks bad
They won’t give peace a chance
That was just a dream some of us had
Still a lot of lands to see
But I wouldn’t want to stay here
It’s too old and cold and settled in it’s ways here
Oh, but california
California I’m coming home
I’m going to see the folks I dig
I’ll even kiss a sunset pig
California I’m coming home

I met a redneck on a grecian isle
Who did the goat dance very well
He gave me back my smile
But he kept my camera to sell
Oh the rogue, the red red rogue
He cooked good omelettes and stews
And I might have stayed on with him there
But my heart cried out for you, california
Oh california I’m coming home
Oh make me feel good rock’n roll band
I’m your biggest fan
California, I’m coming home

Chorus:

Oh it gets so lonely
When you’re walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
Just gives you the blues
Just gives you the blues

So I bought me a ticket
I caught a plane to spain
Went to a party down a red dirt road
There were lots of pretty people there
Reading rolling stone, reading vogue
They said, how long can you hang around?
I said a week, maybe two,
Just until my skin turns brown
Then I’m going home to california
California I’m coming home
Oh will you take me as I am
Strung out on another man
California I’m coming home

Chorus:

Oh it gets so lonely
When you’re walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
More about the war
And the bloody changes
Oh will you take me as l am?
Will you take me as l am?
Will you?
