What's your favorite cookbook? Mine is one I just purchased, the Betty Crocker Cooking Basics Cookbook here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0028624513It's excellent. Not gimmicky, but tailored to the rank beginner looking to improve.

2. I've got a copy of The Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer from1946. |
|
First copyright date is 1931. It's a wartime cookbook. Have used it for years. Got it from my ex-mother-in-law.

3. Joy of Cooking is a classic. |

It covers most any question you might have about cooking, like how to de-bone a chicken breast, measurement conversions plus it has almost any recipe. An irreplaceable all round reference. Great gift for anyone getting ready to start up housekeeping on their own, college students, newly married, etc. I got a new cookbook recently, How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman which is similar in content and may slowly be replacing Joy for me.
For fast and vegetarian, I can't live without Quick Vegetarian Pleasure by Jeanne Lemlin. All her books are great, but this one is my favorite.
