Internet Explorer 6.0 stopped playing mp3s. What do I do?

It used to launch RealPlayer when I clicked an mp3 link, then it launched WinAmp when I clicked an mp3 link, now it just displays garbage when I click an mp3 link.

1. Open up Real Player
Then paste the link into Open URL.

2. Clear your cache
Tools>Internet Options>Delete Files. Clear the offline too.

Works 95% of the time.

4. Wait, sorry, ignore that
I missed that last line about it displaying garbage. It sounds like your file associations are screwed up, and IE thinks that MP3 files are text or web pages. The simplest way to fix this is to reinstall RealPlayer and WinAMP so they'll reclaim their file types.

3. What OS Are You Using
XP has a repair function built in or you could take it back to a Restore Point.

Alternatively, you could use another browser like Mozilla's Firefox. Smaller, infinitely customizable and has built-in pop-protection.

5. This should help
Launch RealPlayer manually
Choose Preferences from the Tools menu in RealPlayer
On the left hand side of the Preferences dialog, look for 'Content'
If there is a plus sign next to Content, click the plus sign
Under Content, look for 'Media Types'
Click on Media Types
Check the box next to MP3 if there isn't a check mark already there
Make sure that 'Notify me when these preferences are modified...' is checked
Make sure that 'When clicking media in the RealPlayer browser...' is checked
Click OK

That should make RealPlayer the default application for playing MP3s again. If not, you may need to uninstall and then reinstall RealPlayer.

6. ok, launching RealPlayer did it.
I was prompted about whether to make RealPlayer the default, and I clicked yes, and now Internet Explorer is launching RealPlayer when I click an mp3 link.
