Could you date/ marry somebody who was a repub? |
|
I know it has worked with James Carvile, but how many of you could honestly have a relationship with a person who was not of the same political persuasion as you?
Personally, I could not do it.

I have one conservative friend, and let's just say we really can't discuss politics. He's also a conservative Catholic priest. (In case you're wondering, we share a love of silent films - other than that, I can't imagine why we would be friends!)

Yesterday's moderates are todays's "leftists" (because things have gotten so far flung to the right in my opinion)
Rank and file Republicans used to be way more moderate than they are today and in fact most of the Dem voters that I know over the age 60 these days used to be Republicans.
Things have just swung WAY far right now... it's insane.

Love transcends all things. I've read about Protestants and Catholics intermarrying in Northern Ireland, and on occasion Israelis and Palestinians intermarry. In the grand scheme of things the gulf between an American liberal and conservative is not so great. I'm sure I'll be flamed for saying that, but no matter. I can take it. No one says is going to be easy, but you're limiting yourself otherwise.

All liberals don't think alike on everything, all conservatives don't think alike on everything.
Some Democrats believe in some of the ideas of Republicans and vice versa.
It's very complicated and not having a relationship becase a person is Republican reminds me of the old days when we were told to marry "one of our own".

and your thoughts. If the each rejects that which is themselves ,what is there for either them or you to love? I am curious what you could love about a person who you thought held morally repugnant positions on life and you felt the same about them. You might experience physical attraction, but that is not my definiton of love, so I ask, what would you love about such a person?

If you have any type of fetish or are into a certain physical "type," then their mind or soul doesn't come into it. Use em and lose em, frankly if they're wingnuts, all the more reason not to feel bad about discarding them in the cold light of morning. Marriage is different. Frankly I'm not sure why anyone would marry someone who had a completely different belief system except to take them for their money which is clearly not the case in the Carville household. I guess I just assume they must share an enduring fetish/sexual interest that over-rides their brains.

but it would have to be someone who thinks for themselves and who is level headed in debate. I would be more likely to take up with a Libertarian then a Republican, but I wouldn't rule someone out because of their political affiliation. Sort of a hypothetical though since my man is a liberal :)

Relationships are hard enough without having major differences like that. It's part of my values. I've never met a Republican man anyway who was interested in me for my mind though (I've met some pigs in fact), so I doubt it's going to be a problem. Not that I would only want to someone to be interested in my mind, but it needs to be a part of it.

I know from experience I don't get along at close range with anyone who leans right of center. Believe me, I've tried more than once. No can do.
My political views are not just something I trot out when Election Day appraoches. They're values -- they're who I am.

It is too much a part of my core values. They have become the enemy, through their own choosing.
I could not marry anyone who was not pro-choice, either, or who hated animals.
You want a companion to share your life, not take it over.
It is hard enough to compromise in a relationship, but it is necessary. I can't see compromising on my most important beliefs.

The answer for me is YES, I could probably at least go out with a Republican woman, but if she were hard-core neocon I really doubt that we'd even get to that stage. Not all Republicans are evil, twisted, necons, but it's still a party that's aligned primarily with forces and attitudes that I can't believe that anyone with any goodness or compassion could embrace. Anyone even slightly informed, I mean...
