Changing my last name. Suggestions?
My first name is Jacob (but I go by Jake), and my last name is long and hard for other people to say and write.

4. Jacob is such a beautiful name...
....I am sure it will go with anything you pick. Only suggestion I have: Is there some way to just shorten your last name? Maybe use just a part of it? I have a friend and his family name was Katzenbach. He changed his last name to Katz. BTW: Good luck with this!!

21. keep it.
Granted I don't know what it is, it could be something like Urinal Cake, and that could be tough. Kidding of course. I would suggest keeping it. Again, I don't know anything about you, or your family, but I kinda take pride in my family, and who they are and where they came from. It can be interesting to learn about the meanings of names and such. My last name means something along the lines of the people/family that lived near/by a lake. I love water, so I think it works. Oh, and Welcome to DU!!!!!!...Kevin.

If you want to go into politics and people hear you've changed your last name will some try to paint you as sneaky or ashamed of your heritage? Just a thought.

18. No its not Hitler
I am not sure what you mean by pride. Am I proud of my family? Absolutely, couldn't be more so. Its just that I could have a last name that is A. More convenient and B. More fully represents me, so to speak. If that makes any sense.

55. Even though you are proud of your family
changing you last name will give the appearance to many that you are ashamed of your heritage and/or are very shallow. Any opponent you will face if you run for office will bring this up. Not to say that I don't understand why you want to change your last name. My name was changed when I was about ten for family reasons. If you run for office I think changing it will cause more harm than good. Didn't Tsongas run commercials where he tried to get people to pronounce his name when he first ran for Senate? His constituates managed to get past his difficult to pronounce name.

20. Could you use your mother's maiden name or another family name?
If you aren't married,get married,and take your wife's name.

I think a name with meaning would be better than one just chosen for no particular reason other than simplicity.

24. Hmm. I changed my name, but it was more socially
acceptable b/c I'm a woman who took her husband's name (and my maiden name was difficult, too). You might get crap for changing it if you do run for office (esp. anything more than local or state office). Take all the letters of your name and see if you can combine them into something you like...

Adam, because Adam is a Christian, Jewish and Muslim name (i.e. easily recognisable by at least 3 billion people, which is half the world's population).

However, some people got confused and thought that was my first name, so I changed my surname back.

But you could try something like Jake Adams...

Or Van den Langenberg. Went to school with a few of those. Also know a Sankappanavar. I love the Indian and Thai names. Friend of mine married a woman from Thailand, and I just HAD to count the letters in her name - 15 for her family name; one less than Van den Langenberg.
