I need the OPINIONS of some DU critics: Do I really SUCK that bad???
I think the science of writing posts and getting responses will one of these days be the subject of much scientific interest.

And I am usually in the reactive mode when posting. I do not usually start threads on my own (although i do occasionally). I like to stir the pot and as some of you know I have been working on a book and writing style is critical for success.

But I started a thread on Michael Moore basically comparing him to a prophet of Biblical proportions.

In fact I called him a saint and compared his film to a few miracles of Jesus.

I thought it was rather clever and somewhat controiversial and sure to get some responses.

But it pretty much sank like a stone.

I hoped those of you who like to write and comment and critique might give me a thoughtful critique of what is wrong (or right) about it.

here is the thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x557318

read it and tell me WHY this sank like a stone or why it sucks: am I just too much of an idiot or is the concept just to bizarre as one poster put it?

or what?

1. Oh, quit whining!
You got 20 replies (even if half of them are yours).

On some of mine I'm lucky to get two! <grin>

(The above message is satire and not meant to be taken seriously)

5. Thanks - I understand why many threads sink and suck BUT
THIS one I worked hard on.

I composed and edited it and even sent it in to the DU page for consideration.

I thought it was interesting enough even to get some notoriety (because it was kind of inanely buttkissing Moore as a Holy Man which I was sure would invite some risicule and scorn from the right)

But I am serious about the message. This film is an historic event not unlike the deeds of other great men.

It may well be a turning point in history - and as such, if it is for the good, has a tinge of the miraculous to it.

I think it does.

But I just wondered why others may not be touched that way as I was by this film.

4. A Messianic Michael Moore is just a wee bit over the top...
Comes on a little strong.... and has a VERY biblical tone to it... something that personally turns me off. But that's just me. I think you're too worried about whether your threads take off or not. Even if one person reads it without responding, it's out there and may have some effect or be of some use to someone. And on the other side, I can't tell you how happy I am to see some of the threads I've created drop to the nether regions like lead balloons.

but pretty much a spiritual person with roots in Buddhism and mystical spiritual philosophy (including the Jesus and Kabbalic teachings as well as Islam).

But the biblicial analogies were meant to inspire responses, not evasion.

Maybe it is a subject just too uncomfortable for some.

I do tend to see things in mystical terms and these events in mystical terms (a battle of good versus evil/hate versus love, etc.) so I drew this in those terms specifically.

just giving you my reaction to your other thread, and why I personally probably wouldn't post to it. Not about being uncomfortable, but simply because it's a perspective I don't share. I'm just not one to take a mortal man and hoist him onto a pedestal. I also don't see things as good/evil and love/hate... it's perspectives like that that make the world such a difficult place as it is. Peace.

there's a lot of democrats here, maybe some people didn't like when you pushed that vile Drudge smear about Kerry and the intern, a smear so shitty that even Fox Sunday declined to discuss it.

11. Hey, I posted threads that NOBODY responded to.
So have other DUers.

Maybe comparing Moore to "a prophet of Biblical proportions" is just way too out there for most of us. Moore is creative, smart, and passionate. I love his work. He is getting people to think and act. I wouldn't call that a miracle.

Well, I'd only call it a miracle if he would get some die-hard Bush-loving freepers into voting for Kerry. But for that, they would need some ability to think critically, which we all know they aren't capable of.

12. C'est la Net!
You can work for an hour on the most scintillating post imaginable and see it drop like a rock, while somebody's gibberish in the Lounge attracts 50 replies in the first five minutes. Not that there's anything wrong with Lounge gibberish, mind you. ;-) You have no idea how many super-cool threads I've started, only to see them vanish before my dismayed eyes.

Dude, you probably don't suck. It's just the way of the world. Plus, there were about 47,000 competing MM threads that day, most likely.

22. gee thanks
I wonder how many share your opinion?

aside from falling for the apparently fabricated alex polier story, what other items of nonsense do you assert I have posted?

Anti-nuke?

MIHOP?

anti skull and bones (and hence, until the primaries ended, opposed to Kerry's candidacy?)

wellstone murder?

EMP weaponry used for political assassinations and possibly on 9-11 to bring the flight down in Pennsylvania?

Which of those positions are nonsense?

and why?

15. Don't understand your problem there.
You got way more responses than I ever got to any of my (possibly) dozen threads in the last nearly four years on this board. ;-) Don't worry - be happy!

But your post was a little bizarre, over the top and almost worshipful, and also possibly the MM story is running down a little.

16. Thanks for the (mostly) thoughtful responses
this board is so damn busy anyway that most things, unless they start a good argument, sink pretty fast.

It is an interesting phenomenon.

I guess maybe I was trying too hard.

18. I rarely write anything in General Discussion that doesn't sink.
Anytime I start something new, it gets locked as a dupe. Pretty sad. I usually just end up responding to others over there.

20. Well, seventhson, it's like this...
To get a bunch of replies, you have to leave room for people to talk about themselves. People looooove to talk about themselves. Another DUer & I tried an experiment several months back. The thread was asking "what size shoes do you wear?" It got nearly 100 replies with very little coaxing.

You have to appeal to people's vanity to get a bunch of responses. There are plenty of exceptions to that, of course.
