One team might have 10 wins and 5 losses while the other has 10 wins and 4 losses. The second team is ahead by half a game.

If The Tigers played 20 games and won 10, and the White Sox played 19 and won 10, the White Sox would be slightly ahead, which is expressed by calling it a half game.
