Picked up a hitchhiking carny today!

Driving home from the paper route, saw a hitchhiker. Karma dictates that I pick him up, because I hitchhiked so much as a younger man.

Turns out he's a carny on the way to work the carnival in my town for the Fourth. Gave me a non-stop recitation of the story of the girl he was supposed to ride with, who threw him out of the car and took his money. Nice enough guy, though.

By the way: carnies smell funny. It's true.

She was shocked that I knew what a carny was. We were at a fair and, gesturing at the people running the games, she said, "God, I don't miss this!" I asked, "You used to be a carny?" She was really shocked.

She was also shocked that I wasn't shocked when she told me she used to be a working girl. :shrug:

It got me to thinking, I may be almost too old to run away from home and join the circus... so I think I better do it while I can still run. WHO'S WITH ME?
