Southern Abolition movement |

Civil War historians feel free. Was there a southern abolition movement prior to and during the Civil War? Of what importance was this group and how were these folks treated by slavery protectionists?

Don't know if there was much of a "movement" though.
The Union army had volunteers from every state of the Confederacy.
