Tabs? Eh?

What do I love about this browser that I don't know about.

Former IE user here.

2. Freedom to customize and tabbing.
Tabs are my favorite by far of any browser's functions. I also enjoy being able to have different skins so that I can change the look of my browser every so often. It's a great browser. I think you'll really like it.

8. I didn't think much of tabs at first.
But now I couldn't live without them.

They are SO handy for train-of-thought browsing. Open up a Google search, then do the right-click, "Open in new tab" command for a search result. Switch back to the Google tab and right-click the next one. Compare/contrast contents between multiple results. I keep a page with a related tab open almost all the time. I love 'em.

9. lets you have a bunch of pages within the same window
It's great when you like to have DU on one tab and news articles or something open too.

27. Just using the tabs on the browser
so that you can have anywhere from one to say twenty webpages loading at the same time. It makes the DU experience that much better.

4. Tip for tabs
Instead of just clicking on links that bring up pages in a new window, right-click on the link (or control-click on a Mac) and choose 'Open Link in New Tab'. I like this much better, since I don't have to lose my place in what I was reading due to being distracted by a new window opening.

You can turn pop-up windows off -- do so!
You can add additional search engines to the 'google box' at the top right of the window. Click on the 'G' to see the options.

I grabbed some of the free extensions for Firebird/Firefox/Mozilla and put a built-in RSS headline reader into mine. It's reasonable useful when doing a quick scan of lots of headlines.

Finally, it's immune to spyware, to the best of my knowledge.

5. The first thing I noticed was
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 12:44 PM by burythehatchet
that Firefox loads/refreshes pages in a different way. Whereas Explorer sends a request to refresh a page, the entire page goes blank and then starts reloading. Firefox, however, knows what elements of a page do not change. So when it reloads its only asking for the data which can change. Long story short - it loads a hell of a lot faster.

on edit - oh yeah and Cheney Microsoft.

6. My two favorite things about Mozilla
are the tabbed browsing (which I could not live without at this point) and ForumZilla - http://forumzilla.mozdev.org/ (integrates with Mozilla Mail/Thunderbird) - RSS feeds right in your email client.

It's also nice that it's more or less immune to browser hijackers and other hijinks.

12. And regarding tabs
You can bookmark groups of tabs (under Bookmarks::Bookmark This Group of Tabs), and then load them later - it's great to be able to have all my pol sites (DU, Buzzflash, Truthout, etc), all open with a single click.

13. Well, because of this thread, I download the OS X version
and I'm really liking it. I've been using Mozilla, but Firefox seems to have a smoother interface, at least so far.

A question: is there any way to change the default tabbed browsing? I like new windows by default and tabs only when I choose.

16. You'll be headed back to IE.
Too many sites now are tailored to work with IE -- and getting Flash, Shockwave, other apps to work with Mozilla is either a huge headache or just downright impossible.

Open source isn't always all it's cracked up to be.

18. That's true
I can't get the full album listening party to work with Firefox - but I just use IE for a few sites.

NIS is the only firewall with popup blocking that works great. I don't use it. And most pop-up blockers come without referrer blocking, which I also want. I've been having problems with ZoneAlarm Pro, and have temporarily at least gone over to Sygate Personal Firewall. SPF has a problem with proxies, which active content blocking programs with multiple features are.

21. For IE-enhanced pages
Use Avant Browser as a backup.

http://www.avantbrowser.com

It's built on IE, but with tabbed browsing and a little more security. Also blocks popups.

The new version seems a bit sluggish, though.

Firefox seems to be sleeker.

19. I just started using it this morning, too
at work, anyway. We are loading it on all the new machines now, and after reading about the latest IE spyware nastiness, I decided to go with Mozilla.

So far, so good. No conflicts. My SO has been using it for several weeks and says there are a few quirky things but not significant.

20. I've had it a few weeks
I like the tabs and no pop-ups. So far I like it mainly because I am not getting any pop-ups and none of those windows that come up and say something like "do you want to send an error report"?
I got something that really messed me up that must have came in when I was using IE, and I did everything I could to fix it. I got most of it fixed, but changed to Firefox...and all is well so far.
