had the tribe at ponce inlet today, hard up on the beach inside the jetties on the neap outgoing tide for the month
mid-week day, nobody much about
A beautiful group of manatees, 6 fully grown adults, popped up in front of us, 5 yards off the beach. the current was ripping there, but they were healthy and made short work of moving along the beach against her.
the kids and i ran up the sand along side them for a stretch, and then we ran out on the sand bar in knee-deep water and they passed within arms reach, on the sharp drop-off there. They were huge adults, 7-8 feet long. i was very happy to see not one prop scar on the bunch. the whorls their paddle tails put up are awesome.
we have seen plenty of manatees in the wild before, but never in as big of group, nor all full adults.
damn, they were moving on, they must be by edgewater now. good grass for them there.
Sea cows kill me, they are a study in contradiction. ugly and beautiful at the same time. lumbering yet graceful. huge, but so vunerable. there one minute, then gone

It's my dream to hang with them -- I've heard there are some areas you can dive with them in a safe/considerate way. One story I heard is that they have been known to hold a diver to their chest and then spin slowly. :)
There is something wonderfully other-worldly about them that I am so attacted to. I even have a silver manatee thumb ring I wear sometimes.
Can't wait to make my way to Florida!

8. They have a couple at the Dallas Aquarium. |

They are so sweet. Such gentle creatures. That place is awesome (The Aquarium). Although, I hate to see them in captivity. Duckie

I was walking along Biscayne Bay--behind the hotel I was staying at and one surfaced. I was just in awe!
