Poll question: Why do people publicly claim 'dupe'?
Edited on Tue Jul-06-04 11:10 PM by MGKrebs
I mean, what's wrong with just sending the alert and letting the Mods handle it? And what do they expect to happen anyway? For the poster to lock their own thread somehow?

2. So hopefully other DUers will stop posting to that thread and
post their thoughts on the subject in the original thread instead of the dupe one.

At least, that's why I do it when I do it.

It has nothing to do with embarrassing the poster of the dupe, as we all dupe from time to time.

6. Right there with ya
Posters can't always know if it's a dupe...if someone informs me I have posted a dupe story within the time frame, I'll edit and delete

11. Also
So that the original poster will hopefully blank the thread and replace the title with "DUPE PLEASE DELETE." :)

16. LOL, yeah it so obvious often when someone posts 'dupe'
that it's because they don't like the 'spin' of the original post and want to limit the terms of the debate to something that supports their viewpoint. I guess it's easier than actually attempting to engage in a discussion.

5. I Can See It In LBN
Not so much in GD and rarely in the Lounge.

Someone posting in GD often has a different slant on things and anything goes in the Lounge.

7. So if the purpose is to flag the current thread as a dupe....
...of another identical thread, why is there never a link to the master thread? I would love to go directly to that original, but unless the topic is in the subject line, how does one find the original they are talking about? Remember that.....

....You can dupe some of the threads some of the time, <> , >< , and you can dupe some the the threads all of the time, >><<, <<<>>>, < >, :) but you can never fool the fooler, that's what I always say <smirk> - - Dubya

9. I always post a link when I mention a thread is a dupe.
I agree, though, it'd be nice if everyone did that, instead of just posting "dupe nt" like some folks do and expecting everyone else to search for the original thread.

8. Now that you've added the word 'dupe' to your question I want to change my
answer to:

Because they are idiots.

13. It's weird, it would not let me enter the word
'dupe' in quotes, only in the pseudo quotes like in this line.

It's actually not a bad thing to do.. It alerts other posters who might pour out their soul, only to return to the thread....LOCKED..

As a former mod, I can tell you that this is a very "prickly" issue.. Let's say that three posters post the exact item .. One is posted early in the am, and drops to page 2 with 10 replies.. The second post is posted mid morning and also drops to page two with 20 replies.. and then the 3rd is posted mid afternoon .. The two posters who posted the original article check back in and see that THEIR post has "passed on" ,and others posted AFTER theirs, and with fewer replies is on page one..

Perhaps the alert was hit a few times, but the mod for that forum has been out.. WShen they come back, and check in they are faced with a dilemma.. Do they lock the "true dupes" , or do they lock the two with the fewest replies??

So if someone posts Dupe on a thread at reply #3, it's a warniong, that the thread "may" get locked..

It's never personal, and often several "similar" threads stay open and "compete" with each other..(especially on a big news day)..

Please do not take it personally, and if you ever get one locked that you disagree with, it's a nice gesture to email (privately) a mod in that forum, and ask about it politely.. you could also ask why, and plead your case as to why yours should remain open...instead of going to Admin and Hollering " WHY DID MY THREAD GET LOCKED"?..:)

15. I do it to save people from posting to something that might get locked
and I always include a link to the original thread, to help people out.

I HATE IT when I post to something, a very witty wondrous post, and then the thread gets locked because it was a dupe and I didn't know it.

I think it is VERY helpful to point out a dupe.
