1. For playing, Winamp
I generally use Musicmatch for my conversion needs, but there might be a better converter out there.

3. There's a free version, yes
I got a registered version with my Archos Jukebox, though... the best thing about Musicmatch is Super Tagging, which gets the right ID3 tags for your music... that's one of the biggest things missing from the free version.

5. if you're looking for a program to encode mp3 files...
I'd suggest freerip, it's a freeware program that can rip mp3's from cd as well as convert from wave files...

It does EVERYTHING.
