1. Why would you EVER avoid Edinburgh? |
|
Seeing the castle and walking the Royal Mile are musts (IMHO).
Go to Islay and do a Lagavulin distillary tour!

7. Agree - I'd never avoid Edinburgh - and Glasgow is easy enough to drive |
|
through to the airport.
The "Island" above Glasgow - Ski or Sky - my mind is not working this morning - is a great spot to relax -
But one lane two way roads are the standard north of Edinburgh/Glasgow - so learn to take the curves "easy" - and be ready to back up!
Have a great time!

2. Don't ask for a Kiss in Glasgow. |
|
Up around Pitlochrie and Perth is really nice. Make sure you mention to anyone you meet how much you hate shrub. I'm a bit ashamed I can not offer you more advice only living 300 miles away. You'll have a great time :-)
I really mean it about the shrub thing, Scotland is where the heart of Old Labour is now.

6. Play the Old Course at St Andrews |
|
if you can pony the greens fees.
Check out Dunbar castle, Inverness, Ft William, and Ben Nevis (if the fog isn't too bad). Loch Lomond is beautiful. Bring a fly rod or learn how to Spey cast while you're over there.

8. Why would you avoid Glasgow? |
|
How dare you insult my hometown! Drive west from Glasgow along Loch Lomond, through the Rest and Be Thankful to Inveraray to Lochgilphead from where you can go south to the Mull of Kintyre or west to Crinan (nice part of the world), then North to the big-ticket items, Glencoe, Fort William, Mallaig, Torridon, Inverness. Aberdeen is worth a side-trip, as is Deeside. Dundee isn't (I was born there, I should know). Galloway and the South-West is quite nice. Oh, and avoid Fife. I just don't like Fife. No reason really. :D
