So my mom calls again the next night
after this giant argument in which she basically said I'm stupid for believing anything on the internet and in which I clearly and thoroughly articulated my opposition to the war and leaves a message asking me to look up a website. Oh, and it's not just any website - she wants to help this particular bunch of Army guys drop soccer balls and yo-yos and gum out of their plane to kids in Iraq.

She could have called the TV station, could have donated through the bank that was surely mentioned in the news report, could have written down the address that I'll bet was also given - but no, she wants me to look it up for her.

Ack! Could my mother be any more oblivious? I don't think so. Thank god I was online when she called. I guess I'll just stick a printout in the mail and not answer the phone for a few days. She wouldn't want to hear what I have to say about this.

1. I hope those were soft yo-yos .. .
A yo-yo dropped out of a plain could seriously injure a kid :)

3. My mom will go on a tyrade about Michael Moore...
...but she won't even listen to me, because in her words "I do whatever Michael Moore tells me to do." Apparently, it's ok to be a sheep, but when I think for myself, I'm letting someone else lead me around by my nose. IT makes no sense. I commiserate. Just be glad my mom isn't your mom. My mom has gone off the deep end, and she can't swim.

4. Your mom isn't my mom.....but they sure think the same way...
Believe me, I can relate to what you are going through. My conversations with my mom are limited to the smallest of small talk. Anything more will lead to a blow-up. She knows better than to even ask "how are you", cuz I will go off!

5. And you think your mom is different or worse than mine in what way ...?
I've discussed Michael Moore with my mom exactly twice. The first time was several months ago, after I watched Bowling for Columbine. "Oh, he's a jerk," she said, as soon as I mentioned his name. It must have been around Oscar time. I asked why he's a jerk and got the usual vague, baseless answer. It was a brief conversation and certainly not one in which I gave her any reason to believe Michael Moore is my guru. I did say I agreed with his comments at the Oscars.

The second time - which was the night before last - she brought up Michael Moore. We were having this wide-ranging argument that began with her seeing John Kerry on TV and saying she hoped he didn't win because he's just so awful. I don't remember how we got around to Michael Moore, except that she suggested him as the source of some fact I threw out that she didn't want to accept. The implication was that I believe everything he says. She assumes I've been hypnotized by him or something. Later, she said my mind had been poisoned. It's just so offensive, as if I'm not capable of thinking for myself. I just suck up every lie I read on the internet and do Michael Moore's bidding ... when I'm not doing Al Franken's bidding, that is.

So, anyway, I printed out the stupid website and put it in the mail. I can't decide if she felt bad about the argument - or "our discourse," as she called it - and just needed an excuse to call, or it was her way of proving (because I don't have access to this kind of information) that good things really are happening in Iraq and we really are freeing the Iraqi people and what have you.

Either way, it was incredibly thoughtless. All it really proves is she doesn't have a clue or a whit of respect for what I think.
