Kids Likely Stole 20 Plastic Pigs From Yard

Mundelein police are searching for the swine who swiped 20 plastic pigs from a local resident's yard earlier this week.

The pignappers probably were kids playing a prank, Deputy Police Chief Michael O'Brien said, since there's not much black-market demand for foot-high imitation livestock.

"These things usually turn up somewhere down the line in somebody else's front yard," O'Brien said Wednesday. "(But) we handle this no differently than any other theft investigation."

The plastic porkers, valued at $10 each, were stolen between 2 and 3 p.m. Monday off Gary and Rita Gunther's front yard on the 1900 block of Manor Lane. The stubby decorations were on display as part of a fund-raiser for a teen group at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church near Mundelein.

The group is renting plastic pigs to parishioners to offset the cost of an upcoming trip and to promote the church's annual pork and corn roast in early August.
