My Girlfriend's Beloved Dog Was Put To Sleep (tear-jerking photo inside)
My girlfriend lost her 12-year-old Maltese, Puff, two nights ago after massive organ failure. It was the family dog, and the only pet she's ever had.

She's pretty distraught over the loss. I've never had a dog, so I don't exactly know what to say to her. Could anyone offer advice, or some kind words?

Here's a photo of Puff when he was a baby.

2. There's not much one can say.
It might help if you understand how close people are to their pets and how positively the pets have benefited their owners.

4. Just be there for hugs
and let her talk about Puff. Soon all the good memories will outweigh the grief. It takes time. It's never easy to lose a pet.

Maybe you could find a recent pic of the two of them and enlarge it. Place it in a nice frame.

5. Sorry about your loss...
I know how it feels to put a pet doggy to sleep. I had the best black/tan doberman named Shera. She grew very old, began to develop tumors all over her body to the point where she would yelp everytime she moved an inch. My mom, brother and I couldn't stand it anymore and decided to put her to sleep. We spent so much money trying to cure her through surgery....THE WORKS, and nothing helped. My brother, mom, and my mom's friend went to put my dog to sleep while I refused to see her go like that. They went to the vet while I went to school. I said my goodbyes before I left to school that day. This way, I'll remember how she was when she was alive. It was so weird because that very day, it seemed like she was doing better...but maybe I was just forcing myself to think that...

7. So sorry for your loss
We went through it in March with our Border Collie, Misty. I cried for several weeks whenever I thought about her. I posted pics of Misty from happier, more humorous times, on the refridge and spent time talking about the good times.....it helps...I still miss that crazy Border Collie.
