OMG-Virginia is FREAKING about new weekend work rules |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 12:39 PM by underpants
Actually old weekend work rules. This really could be GD or LBN.
Background-"blue laws" (I remember them ending) were laws that restricted what businesses could be open on the weekends, specifically on Sundays. I can remember when only grocery stores and drug stores could be open but as one locality allowed other businesses to open other localities followed suit-ah money trumping religion.
Apparently as the General Assembly was winding down after heated arguments over the budget (Warner wanted to RAISE TAXES!!!-actually lower them for 65% of us) they decided to "clean up" some old laws.
Among those were some old "blue laws" unfortunately in getting rid of them the also got rid of some "exemptions" passed a long time ago. These include: -being able to put in writing what day of the week is your sabbath and you have to be given off that day. Each violation is a $500 fine to the business. -anyone having to work weekends (thank you unions) has to be paid TRIPLE TIME.
Well everyone freaked when they realized what they had done. Gov. Warner is vacationing in Wyoming and may have to call a special session of the GA to reverse these parts of the laws.
Local TV stations are referring to the new/old laws as "silly" "outdated" and "ridiculous". I wonder if my fellow Virginians will wake up and realize that they are getting screwed and demand that the laws stay in place, THAT would be hilarious.

6. Hold on ABC stores will be open on Sundays? |
|
Must rethink my position on this.
What I wrote was just from what I have heard. I should find an article on it and read it but at this point the spin is so hard I doubt I can find a good one on it. Maybe the Timies-Dispatch has a good evenly based feature on this matter pertaining to the working man and woman.

That last sentence made me choke with laughter. (Former Richmond resident)
I think ABC stores in Tidewater and NoVa are the only ones opening on Sunday.

Figures NoVa and Hampton Roads are probably the biggest money makers, ya know out Roanoke way some make their own. HR is the biggest money maker for the lottery-1/2 the money and 1/2 the winnings go to HR.
I think the T-Disgrace has actually gotten worse the last few years-actually cited on the Fox channel and OFF THEY GO!!!!!!
ON EDIT- I forgot you are out the Roanoke way. :hi:

11. Don't know anyone personally that makes their own |

But I have accidentally ended up at parties where some of Franklin County's finest was being offered. Nobody told me what those berries were soaking in, I swear. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

2. I think my employer freaked last week |
|
They were trying to get people to work last weekend and then the paper had an article about the old law being repealed so all of a sudden they said "no weekend work". Since the Chambers of Commerce etc. got the injunction I'm sure they will want to work this weekend.
It was funny watching the news and they were talking about how many millions this was going to cost employers no mention of the fact that that would have been millions in peoples pocket to spend. I would like to see an anti-worker law get over turned that fast.

3. Va. and the right to work.... |
|
Va. is a right to work state.... they will use that to strike down the law... My SO the Commie.... is a sous-chef and ALWAYS works weekends.... as he is an atheist.... he doesn't need a "sabbath" but he says there are many he works with who SHOULD use church as an excuse so that they do not have to swing sunday childcare (often double priced)... Personally I think childrearing is religion unto itself.... you certainly have to have faith!
