Poll question: Are you allowed to listen to music/radio/etc. at work?
Are you allowed to have music on while you work? Are you allowed to listen to the radio? Are you allowed to work with headphones on?

1. I have about 1200 songs loaded on my work computer...
I listen to them using Win Media Player. It takes about 6 work days to cycle through the whole list.

2. Turn it down, Milton!
I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

3. That's about the best thing about my job
I do data entry for the postal service and can use headphones on the job. I'm about halfway through the recorded version of We Were the Mulvaneys and have Jude the Obscure waiting in the wings.

I've tried listening to music, but have a harder time concentrating.

7. I miss my music
A few months into my job at our current facility, I noticed that I could play cds on the computer at work. The rule in the handbook reads "There shall be no radios in production areas." My lab is not a production area and the cd player is not a radio so I brought some cds. The first time my boss walked in while I was playing music, I did ask him if it was alright to which he said yes but that I shouldn't tell everyone about my music since most people there didn't have the opportunity to listen to music. My lab is just outside a production area and with the thickness of the door and the loudness of the machines, it could not really be heard outside the room. I am usually the only person working in my lab. Everything was going fine. A couple people knew. One of the partner's knew as he walked into my lab a couple times. Then a couple of the production women who had been jealous of me found out about my music and said that they didn't think it was fair. Then a few weeks later, the partner complained to my boss that I was playing inappropriate music loudly (It was the first Pink cd and the music wasn't that loud.) Then this came up at my review when I didn't get a raise after I appealed. I agreed to play music at a low level and limit my cd selections. Then a short time later my computer died. They gave me a used computer to replace it. I was dismayed to find that I couldn't get the cd player to work.
I miss my music. I do not find it distracting to my work. Being alone in the lab, I sometimes start thinking about negative stuff and get stressed out. Music helps keep my anxieties from getting away from me and tends to quiet my negative self talk. I dread going to work more now that I don't have music.

13. I drive my car delivering pizzas most of the time, so I can.
There's no rules against listening to the radio in my own car.

14. I work at home, when I'm working these days...
I have about 16h of music on my hard drive right now (I wish I had more, but I don't). It's just about *always* going.

If I'm not listening to that, I've got a Real stream of Galgalatz radio going, although I can't really surf while listening to it, because it eats most of my bandwidth.

15. I listen to my XM all day on headphones
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 03:52 PM by geniph
I don't believe in inflicting my choice of music on anyone else, nor do I appreciate it when others play theirs loud enough to be heard at other desks. I use the type of headphones I can hear past, in case the phone rings or someone radios me or comes by to ask me a question.

My satellite radio keeps me sane.

I don't like listening to music on the computer. I usually have about fifteen remote sessions to server consoles running, and it would slow the machine down too much to be streaming music at the same time. Plus I don't much like MP3's.

17. Sure

I can keep my guitar and practice amp behind my desk and play all I want too. My boss came in the other day and I was playing along with Waitin' for Columbus. I bet he stood there for 15 minutes just listening before I noticed he was there.
