I'm wondering if he's interested in letting his fundamental base know that he shares their value that the Bible should be read literally, or if he isn't a kook and actually values science enough to believe it when it says there was no Flood and the Earth is very old.

He's leaning heavy on religious America, particularly fundamentalists, but can't claim to share core values with fundamentalists and "mainstream America". Mainstream America values the New Testament and science. Fundies value the Bible as the literal word of God.
