Help me out of my musical wasteland!
I've just spent the last 3-4 years having a baby and taking care of that baby in a place where there are no good radio stations, far from home and friends.

I used to be pretty "up" on music but I've been so out of it these last few years. Now, I'm dying to find something new but I'm totally clueless. I'd like to post some of my favorite music and if anyone shares my sort of musical taste, could you PLEASE post some new bands and CDs from the last few years that you really like. Also, are there any websites where I can go hear clips of different music? I need MUSIC in my life! Help!

Here are a few of my very favorite bands and albums (Keep in mind, I'm no spring chicken):

Dave Matthews, Sarah McLaughlin, Counting Crows, World Party, Bruce Cockburn, Chris Whitley, Luscious Jackson, Poe, Lorenna McKinnitt
Neil Young....especially LOVE his slow songs.
Pearl Jam.....everything they've ever made!

1. Goto amazon.com's music section ...
when they list the tracks on a recording, a bunch will have a 20-30 second cut you can listen to.

2. the iTunes site is quite good, too
They have clips and when you do a search on an artist it'll give a list of artists that are similar. I'm sure they all do this, but iTunes is the one I prefer. It's for both Mac and Windows.

5. My babies
are now keeping me a little more current. I have to leave but I will gather the things they have turned me on to and send you a message when I get back. They are 18 and 20, both musicians and music majors in jazz studies but they have tried to keep the "old lady" kind of up to speed. I do not always like what they give me to listen to but you are younger than me so you just might. I hope you find some new things, music is so very important. I am going to a DMB concert next month however I was the one who turned my boys on to them!

6. Thanks, that would be great!
It seems I find more things I like from recommendations than when I just listen to a clip here and there. Often, I'll like the clip and order a CD then end up feeling pretty neutral about the rest of their stuff. My nephew used to keep his "old lady" aunt up to speed, but I don't see him as much these days. He's busy with a new baby himself.
