Anyone here ever pull a hoax? |
|
I mean a prank, that got noticed big time, like in the paper.
About 30 years ago when I was in high school a friend and I built a hot air balloon out of two sticks of balsa in an "x" shape, a big plastic dry-cleaning bag, and a candle.
We were upwind of the school's football field, and during a night game we launched our hot air balloon that drifted at a hundred feet (about) above the crowd.
Sure enough, front page the next day, "UFO Spotted Over High School Football Game."
Two days later local sheriff's deputies find the remains of our balloon, that got into the paper too, less than an inch on page 9.
But the two of us sure got a laugh from the whole thing.

Never a good hoax, though.

Back in the late 80's we created letterhead that looked as though it were sent from a Eris/Discordian secret society, there was something about Industrial Strength Discord on the letterhead. Anyway, I ranted about something incoherent and signed my name, "episp. Bile" Then forwarded a copy to the local paper as a concerned citizen fearing that something was up with this weird group of Discordians.
The letterhead had my home number on it and within a few days I had a reporter on the phone wanting to know if he could meet to discuss the "secret society". I gave him a phone interview and it got printed in the paper.
Within a week, LTTE started appearing from slightly more savvy individuals who recognized that what I told the reporter was taken directly from Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus trilogy.
Ewige Blumenkraft (or something like that)! Hail Eris... bwahahahahah

I was the first person on the entire internet to expose that bogus Nostradamus "prediction" concerning the September 11th attacks. I found all the sources where the author cherry-picked from a number of legitimate Nostradamus quatrains and from an old article that actually was debunking Nostradamus with a fabricated example verse. I posted it in a USENET newsgroup (I can't remember which one - I'm sure its archived somewhere), and it took off from there.

10. Man, I sent that to a lot of people. |

I had been thinking about what Nostradamus had said after 9/11. Unfortunately I wasn't smart enough to double check everything. :spank:

11. Seriously, I did the exact same thing... |
|
only I used paper soda straws and four bithday candles. Launched over a golf course on a very still night and got some cool UFO coverage in the local paper. The damn thing drifted every which way with an eerie glow. My mystery was never solved! Fun!
