Charlotte or NC DU'ers..... Considering a move to your area, any advice? |
|
Warnings to stay away? Areas to avoid while looking for a place to call home? I'm looking to transfer from the job I have now, so employment is HOPEFULLY not going to be an issue. I'm planning on taking a day or two off to go down and check things out and would like to make the most of it, so any help would be appreciated :hi:

That Charlotte is wretchedly boring.
soulless, antiseptic, stepford.

Charlotte has universities, art and music, sports, and it's smack between the ocean and the mountains. Maybe you didn't meet the right Charlotteans.
But stay away from Monroe. Nasty place, Monroe, NC!

|
But tell me more anyway :D
Do you live in Charlotte or just the general area? I'm kinda looking for areas in or near Charlotte since my job will probably be in Charlotte itself. I'd like to find a small house or apartment in a not TOO expensive neighborhood, ASAP. Seemed a pretty big place when I was there in May for a concert, so I guess I'm looking to be pointed in the direction of the right areas. :hi:

12. That depends on what part of town your work place is in |
|
The south side was always the "best" place to live, although since I've been away the north side, around UNC-Charlotte, has really grown a lot. I like the neighborhood called Elizabeth, a nice neighborhood of smaller, older houses that had become popular with educated middle-class folks when I was in the area. I believe it's still that way.

The Deaniacs have kind of energized the Democratic base in the area. Charlotte and York County (SC) Dems sometimes socialize. Check out www.yorkcountydems.org

5. Western NC is Freeper/Fundie land |

Asheville is the lone liberal pocket in the region.
The triad area generally has more open minded, progressive types.

Unfortunately, I can't transfer to Asheville
Would it be worth it to take out my old bartending skills and dust 'em off for a move to Asheville?

11. You could probably find a good bartending gig in Asheville |
|
It's very touristy and has a good restaurant scene.
In terms of overall economics, I'd recommend Charlotte though. WNC is very economically depressed right now. A couple of the factories have shut down, and the rest have been hemmorraging jobs for the past few years.
In case you were wondering, my folks still live in WNC. That's how I know all of this.

15. It depends what you like in a place and what you can cope with |
|
I'm in Columbia SC, so Charlotte is the big city up the road, the place we drive to for good tapas, foreign movies or Costco. It has a reputation as a dull, Republican city, where people's idea of a good time is going to the mall. My friends who lived there (who since moved to Winston-Salem) lived in cul-de-sac land out in Huntersville. I have little insight into the real estate market, but would wild-guess that unless you're making a pile, you'll probably have trouble affording anything nice downtown. Rock Hill (SC) is kinda pleasant, though, now almost entirely a suburb of Charlotte, and we could definitely use all the Democratic voters we can get. In a nutshell, I would counsel caution; if you don't like VA, you probably aren't going to like Charlotte, unless you derive most of your life's pleasure from shopping and professional sports.

Nah, not really my thing at all. Think is, I really really really need to move and Charlotte seemed a good option til now.... not too far away, I'd heard good things about the job outlook and cost of living. Thanks for the info, might have to reconsider my options now.

New York has clubs where you can safely keep those whips.
Just rent a locker at one of them. What could possibly be easier? :P

You just pull into the horse racing track near here and borrow one off one of the jockeys. They're always more than willing to oblige, especially when it involves a young filly. :P
See, in NY you have to think "outside the box" and once you do, all supposed problems are no longer...ummmm......problems. :P
