When does one stop being a Newbie?
I'm just wondering, is it a temporal thing, or contingent on how many posts you accumulate? I just feel like an outsider of late. Maybe it's just my painful insecurity flaring up again.

4. To some people,
never. There are some here on DU that think their opinions are the final word in any debate simply because they have a higher # of posts than others.

I've been getting that vibe lately. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

8. No, you're not
I was berated last week for pointing out someone should be more polite to other DUers even if their opinions weren't quite in line with their own because that person has been a member longer than I have (and I have over 3000 posts myself). :eyes:

Sadly, if John Kerry were to become a member on DU today, I wonder if his opinions would be nullified simply because he hasn't been a member long enough.

21. Great point about Kerry.
BTW, your Ashcroft signature is the funniest signature I've ever seen, bar none. :)

6. Never seen that myself..perhaps you could enlighten us all
I think people look for cause and effect outside themselves because it's safer than acknowledging that maybe they themselves are the source of their difficulties with others.

It does happen, unfortunately. And it's not cause-and-effect, because it's been directly stated.

11. All sorts of things happen...must we paint with a broad brush over your
one incident?

I'm not saying there aren't old timers that treat new posters poorly from time to time but overall most posters welcome new DU'ers...and most PEOPLE on this site treat each other well...furthermore the poster made a very non-specific complaint and attributed it to newness when there are people here who joined AFTER him that are fitting in and participating quite well.

15. I think I was pretty specific with the word "some"
That's not broad-strokes, is it?

DU does tend to be a very welcoming place, but there are those who have a superiority complex that's due only to the number of posts they've made.

18. Prove that that has to do with the number of posts they've made
You have a lesser number of posts and seem to be claiming superior insight in this argument...to what do we attribute your assertions other than conjecture?

20. Direct quotes
Again, this person directly said that because he's been here longer than I have and has had more posts than me that I had no right to criticize the fact that he was being rude to other members of DU.

22. Then hit the alert when someone tells you that
it is in no way symptomatic of most of us that look to the content of the posts rather than post counts

28. again, i didn't say it was
But to say such sentiment doesn't exist on DU would be also incorrect. Unfortunately, there are immature people even here. However, I wouldn't continue to post here if I didn't feel the vast majority of DUers were good people, present company included.

7. If it's because someone asked you not to bring an old flame war into their
thread, I don't think that has anything to do with how long you have or have not been here...

10. I wasn't trying to rekindle an old flame war.
I didn't want to be involved in ANY flame war. I just posted at the wrong place and the wrong time. Oh, fuck, forget it...

12. In my 103 years on this planet I've learned of the
universal "asshole" law which applies to all parties or persuasions. A percentage of people--even those who share basic beliefs with you--are still simply assholes. Just the way it is. And if you don't agree with this, you're an asshole---no matter how many posts you've made.

14. Fine but then why attribute it to your "newness" which you aren't (new)
Again...most DU'ers welcome people...but I would no more paint "newbies" with a broad brush than "oldbies"

This is a community.....a GROUP..and often people bring their issues ABOUT groups to this one...I would assert both you and SirBlack are doing exactly that...projecting your experience with GROUPS onto this one.

17. Don't worry just keep posting, I have been posting here for two
years and have well over 1000 posts. I still feel like an outsider some days! I think it has a lot to do with my pseudonym, some people do not no how to take it. I think some just flat out think I am a freeper mole, others are just not sure. Some may think it is impossible for people to whole heartedly change party affiliation and loose those core values. I have been a lighting rod for freeper trolls, those I especially love, I get no greater pleasure than sparring with them on repub issues. I have the advantage of seeing the issues from both sides and know all the talking points. It is kinda of unfair but they deserve every brow beating and tongue lashing I can dish out. I have also made many good friends and have had some wonderful and enlightening chats here as well. Some old timers took me under their wing when I first started posting here. They were patient with me, they tutored me in both DU etiquette and Democratic values and philosophies. I am totally a Yellow Dog Dem now and I continue to keep my pseudonym just to piss the freepers off! I want to Jeb and George Bush to know that there neocons have turned many of us away from the party because of their arrogant, lock step ways. I want my country back! But I digress, just keep on posting, if any thing it is a great way to vent! There are a lot of people who lurk, they just like to read and do not post very often. So you may be getting your posts read more than you think. So, do like I do, If I read something I like, I use it, If I read something that I do not like, I think about it! The rest is just noise.
