As far as I can tell, the only difference between DSL and dial-up...
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 09:31 PM by NightTrain
...is that the former doesn't tie up your phone. Because my DSL sure as hell doesn't seem any faster than a fucking dial-up connection!

No wonder SBC makes you agree to a year-long contract before they switch on your DSL. Otherwise, I'd cancel the goddamned thing now! :grr:

God, I miss my cable modem!

8. I agree
Recently switched from dial up to DSL (Verizon) and can't believe the difference. I'll never go back to dial up!

2. I miss "Pagoo" (answered the phone when on line w/modem) It had
this cute little flashing logo when a call came in that appeared in the lower corner of my screen. It was a real kick to see it start flashing!!

3. Night Train, google for bandwidth speed tests and do several on your
connection. If it is not near where it was promised, make a call.

We had problems with ours (provided by our phone co-op) and they admitted that they were obligated to install new phone line for our service. The guy who finally got the problem solved said the old type phone line in not the best for DSL. He actually ran a brand new line to our computer and things are much better.

Don't give up just yet!

5. My DSL is no faster than my ISDN was.
I was expecting things to be instantaneous. I got a new computer to go along with the DSL and while some things are faster, most aren't. So my super fast DSL is neither super nor fast. It had a lot problems the first couple of months with the connection but whatever they did the last time must have been the right tweak. But speed - it's okay but not super fast.

7. My DSL (256k up/down) is quite faster than dial-up
SBC sucks.

Qwest isn't perfect but it suffices to serve.

I can play Unreal Tournament at a reasonable speed too, which is nice... not the best, but playable.

9. Hey Nighttrain
I have SBC DSL, it's not too bad, and I'm not too far down the road from you. Sometimes it can get a little slower during the day, but often I need to do a little cleaning up on my computer. If that doesn't work, check it out and complain, if necessary.

10. dsl should be fast -- something is wrong
I'd get a tech out there.

I remember when my buddy who lived downtown (close to the phone company -- they were the first to get dsl here) got his fat 256k dsl connection. He'd been using a dual-dialup connection. That was cool enough (seeing downloads hit 8-10k/sec!), but dsl blew our minds.

12. Try testing your speed
This is a site that I use in dianosing ADSL trouble. I work for a phone company and what you are describing is not normal.

http://www.dslreports.com/stest

What bandwidth are you promised?
Our lowest package is 1.5 M down 756 K up.

Hold SBC's toes to the fire. There are a lot of things that can cause a loss of speed. The most common is bad copper and/or too long of a loop. The maximum to get the bandwidth above is 16 to 17 kilofeet. You have to be within 3 miles of the source of the DSLAM. These units are not necesarily in the Central Office but may be located in a remote site cabinet or hut.

www.dfw.speakeasy.net or www.lax.speakeasy.net. I have a wireless connection at an average 1.7 meg up and down. They might have placed you on their slowest package which in the Dallas area is 3xxk down and 128k up I think.
