Would you consider Metallica's Black Album to be a sellout?
They sold out later and they started heading in that general direction on The Black Album, but do you think that this album was good, or a sellout? Were they already there?

1. Define sell-out
I mean these guys made an album that happened to be picked up by radio stations and the mainstream finally heard them. What ensued was one of the best selling metal albums of all time and one of the few bands that could fill stadiums without being part of some Lollapaloser festival or something else. They became filthy rich and worked damn hard for it. I just don't get the idea of sell-out just because they became popular. I don't hear Metallica hawking products or pimping for the US Army like Godsmack, even though I like their music too.

5. Selling out is when one abandons their ideals.
On this album, I don't feel that they sold out. Many people feel they did though.

15. Good.
I don't see them pandering to ideals. Hell look at the latest album, no guitar solos and every instrument seems tuned down two octaves. Do some think that they made St. Anger to appeal to the masses? No way, they did what they wanted to do and that was make alot of noise. While very different, I like this new album. I think I'm one of the few.

2. On the cusp, but NO

I don't remember it fondly but I'm almost certain that's because it got way too much commercial airplay.

I'll take Ride The Lightning myself.

10. Actually, Master of Puppets
from a production standpoint was just as good as the Black Album. If people had been exposed to that record the way they were to BA it would be remembered (correctly) as their best work.

8. Yes, definitely.
Even though I think it was a total sell-out, it was still a kick-ass album. I can't fault them for going commercial. It wqas when their music started to suffer at the hands of commercialism that I left them in the dust.

12. My big problem with Metalica
Is that I've seen them 3 or 4 times, and each time sounded EXACTLY the same. I don't mean they did the same songs, but it sounded like they were lip-synching to their songs rather than playing them live.
