Apple Computer Inc. reached a milestone early Monday when a Kansas college student downloaded the 100 millionth song sold through Apple's iTunes Music Store.
Kevin Britten, 20, of Hays, Kan., downloaded the hip-hop single "Somersault'' at about 12:45 a.m. Twenty minutes later, the phone rang -- it was Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs calling to tell Britten he had won a 17-inch PowerBook laptop, a 40-GB iPod digital music player and 10,000 free iTunes songs.
"I was thinking it was a joke,'' Britten said during a phone interview. "My dad actually answered and said there was someone on the phone saying he was Steve Jobs.''
The Cupertino computer-maker had hoped to reach the 100 million song mark one year after it started the iTunes Music Store in April 2003. But in a press release, Jobs said iTunes had nevertheless "quickly outpaced the competition and is far and away the world's No. 1 online music service.''
The online service, which recently expanded to parts of Europe, grabbed the early lead in an increasingly crowded field of Internet music services.
