Update on dog that my neighbors abandoned...
I discovered the dog there on Sunday. My neighbors moved out on Wednesday. I called animal control but there is no one there on Sundays apparently. I found the property owners name (it is a rental property) through our county's online tax records and called him at about 8:30 pm. He said he would do something the next day, Monday.

Ok, so yesterday I call animal control at about 2 pm just in case. The woman who answered said that someone had already called and that she had sent someone out. Whew. That was a load off my mind....

Until, I got home. THE DAMN DOG WAS STILL THERE.. I got really ticked off and called the cops. They said they would send someone out. About 30 minutes later an animal control guy shows up at my door. (He said he had seen the cops driving off as he come up) He said that he couldn't do anything because the property owner wasn't there and that, since the dog's owners had left food and water (empty)maybe they were coming back and it wouldn't be abandonment. I gave the guy the property owner's name and phone number.

After he left, I proceeded to creep over there to give the poor dog some water and when I turned on the faucet to fill his bowl he quit growling and barking and came out from under the house. He drank the whole thing. And boy did he reek. He smelled VERY strongly of sh*t. He is also very skinny.

If he is still there when I get home today I don't know what I am going to do.

1. Do you have a Humane Society near you?
They will come get the dog. Or maybe an Animal Rescue organization?

Poor dog - not only abandoned, but sounds like he's been neglected before the neighbors moved too. :-(

23. I have called the Humane Society before about animals
and they told me they don't pick them up. Since this doggy keeps growling, I don't think I will take him in.

3. I hate people who abandon animals
I spend every cent my dad left me when he died getting the cats that people abandoned in my aprtment complex spayed or neutered adn paid for their shots in order to get people who lived here to take them in, but they still keep coming. I think they should find owners and fine them steeply for abandoning pets. (One community in my area started doing that)

4. Horrible story
Poor dog.

Can you imagine his fear and confusion?

People who do things like that are below scum.

If he is still there when you get home, call your local media outlets and let them know the lousy job the dog owner, property owner, police and animal control are doing.

And give him more water, and maybe something to eat.

5. Since you're able to give it a drink
try feeding him. Leave something tasty near by. Then slowly begin taking care of him with water and food. Take a nice blanket that you can do without. After awhile, he's yours. Congrads. A new family member who will never forget your kindness.

10. Sounds like Animal Control's hands are tied
It probably varies from one city or state to another, but having seen Animal Cops episodes taped in different cities, I seem to recall in some places they were able to confiscate abandoned pets immediately, while in others they had to take steps to notify property owners first.

Maybe if the food and water dishes you use are on your property, you might avoid having Animal Control think the owner is taking care of the dog.

14. New York ASPCA seemed pretty aggressive ....

I think they could take the dog right away. Of course, they often don't show the "initial visits". Though, I think they have the right to take the animal into custody if it's life is in jeapordy.

11. Renters tend to abandon their pets more
My Abbott was an abandon cat. Someone in my complex probably found him when he was a cute, fuzzy adorable kitten and brought him in as a pet. But they never bothered to get Abbott fixed and when they moved that cute loveable kitten was a year old big boy. So they put a flea collar on him and tossed him out when they moved.

I had found him coming home from work one cold & rainy night last December. He was going through a garbage bag that didn't quite make the dumpster trying to find his next meal. Now there are feral cats around the apartment complex and they'll run the first site of human beings. But this guy came right up to me, but not quite in petting distance. So I ran in and grabbed a slice of cheese and he came running after that. So I brought him in. I tossed him in my bathroom with a bowl of fresh water & can of tuna (I had no cats at the time) and ran up to my local Family Dollar store where I bought a litter pan, litter, food and a few cheap toys. His fur was dull and lifeless, he had fleas & mites and his paws were all caloused.

I checked with the apartment management about who might have owned the cat and they were not aware of anyone with a pet with that discription and told me about how folks will abandoned their pets when they move. But I did put a few signs up around the neighborhood and got some flea meds and a brush to help with his fur.

Morale of the story: 7 months later I have the most amazing cat you'll ever fine. His fur is so luxorious that you could make a coat out of it and his paws are as soft as a baby's bottom. He's been fixed so he doesn't yowl all night in search of womencats. He is my pride & joy even though he's been known to piddle behind my entertainment center. When he went to the vet about 2 months ago (to get rabies boosters from the bat incident), my vet was amazed at how cleaned up Abbott was from his last visit. Abbott and his girlfriend Evita get high quality food & treats and tons of loving from me. These 2 are high quality cats!!

It's a shame - someone didn't love Abbott enough to give him a good home and now he's living the kitty hi-life in my home instead!

18. Please adopt him if you can!
I did when my neighbors moved out. I can't fault them, the house burned down and they had to move to a "no pets" apartment. They did come and feed/water the dogs until they asked me if I could take them in. I ended up with a male and two pregnant females. The litters came and resulted in three additional dogs.

I have all six now and they are happy dogs. All are fixed, shots up to date and the continue to live in a familiar area. I am in a rural area with no high speed roads for miles so they can roam as they please. I spoil the heck out of them.

Here is 2/3rds of the family.

Adopt the little guy, you won't be sorry!

28. He is a HUGE rottweiler (spelling??)
I heard from another neighbor the his owners didn't want him because he had hip problems. Well why didn't the check first, hip problems are common in that breed. Jerks.

I don't want to call names but these people were very trashy. The kind who get pit bulls and rotties just because they look big and mean and they hope it will rub off on them. They don't love or appreciate their animals.
