50 k
I want to run one next spring. Has anyone run one before? If so, what books/websites did you find helpful for establishing a good training regimen? Thanks for your input!

4. My first foray into ultra marathon territory
Yes, anything above 26.2 miles. I have done a few marathons - since the 50 k is just a few more miles at the end, will I be served well by following a regular marathon schedule, or since the race I want to do is a trail run, do I need to do something completely different? Obviously, I need to spend a lot of time practicing on trails, but what else? THanks in advance for your input!

5. Well, as a fomer Cross Country runner,
I can tell you without a doubt that you are correct, a trail run is going to be a LOT different than a road race. If you have done marathons already, anything I have to tell you probably won't be worth much, since you have done it already. As you know, the last 3-5 miles of the marathon are the absolute worst. Your issue will be that instead of miles 22-26 being the worst, it is going to be miles 26-31. Ouch! Just work on that distance endurance, and make sure you have an equal balance of on-road/off road. It would seem the same rules for marathon training would apply to 50 K training, doncha think?

7. Thanks Shy
I agree, but that damn "wall" that you hit near the end of the marathon was the killer for me - I always seem to break on through so to speak at about mile 24. I guess I need to know my body better and work on the endurance - everything beyond 26.2 is new territory for me.

I am really going to work the trails hard as that is where most of the adjustment will need to be made to my running schedule.

8. If you can do a marathon,
I am sure you can do the 50K! That sounds exciting, I need that kind of motivation. Good luck!
