Happy 91st birthday to Gerald Rudolph Ford
Edited on Wed Jul-14-04 12:29 AM by ih8thegop

One of the two Republican Presidents since Worldd War II who actually had a thread of sanity (the other being Dwight "beware of the military-industrial complex" Eisenhower).

I say that because if you've gone to the University of Michigan, you have some sense in you.

1. The best kind of Republican president: not even a one-termer!

3. Not a great President, but a decent fellow
One might never agree with him, but one couldn't get mad at him, either.

8. I just wish he'd come clean on the Warren Commission BS.
He is the last member of that commission. Arlen Spector was their go-fer, fetching coffee and doughnuts.

4. Not after playing football for them....
Let's not forget that Ford was the right wing's attack dog in the House. That he took the job of VP, even though it came with a condition--that he would pardon Nixon. That he led innumerable attempted impeachment attacks on William O. Douglas. That his Secretary of Defense was Donald Rumsfeld. That his chief of staff was Richard Cheney. That he was not elected to the Presidency, and when the public was given a chance to vote him in, they did not.

Gerald Ford was a bad version of Reagan, Bush I and Bush II.

11. He's been very, very ill recently, hasn't he?
Didn't he have a couple of major strokes a couple years ago?

13. I think he only had some very mild ones.
he had one at the 2000 GOP convention. He sounded a bit drunk from a facial droop on TV (I remember saying that he sounds like he had a stroke at the time) and whammy, there you go.

All I can say is that I hope I'm doing as well at 91.

14. Here's to Gerald Ford, the first unelected (R) president!
Remember, he wasn't even elected VP, but appointed to replace Spiro Agnew (whose daughter went to high school with my mom!)

Too bad he ended up starting a trend... :(

15. Second. Hayes was the first.
Of course, Hayes won because in 1876 congress actually cared about the rights of black voters to vote.

16. Happy 91st.

Not even Gerald Ford, the unhappy ex-president who pardoned Nixon and kept him out of prison, was immune to the evil fallout. Ford, who believes strongly in Heaven and Hell, has told more than one of his celebrity golf partners that "I know I will go to hell, because I pardoned Richard Nixon." -Hunter S. Thompson
