The tree trimmers hired by the city have just mutilated a perfectly good tree that was not anyway near power lines. I am furious. They cut a huge hunk out of it and it looks horrible. Our neighbor has a half dead poplar that was in the way of the lines. The yahoos who were hired to clear some of its branches also hacked up our tree. :cry:

1. City owned tree?

If it's yours, sue. My dad had a city tree trimmer hack one of his Chinese Elm's a couple years ago, and the city ended up having to pay an arborist to graft on a new branch, repair a bunch of bark damage, and restore the shape of the tree. Just a thought.

2. Our tree

It's in our back yard, not in the curb strip. My husband worked for the city for 28 years. He won't sue. He has too many friends there.

I speak before he has seen the tree. He just might end up as angry as me.

3. I came back from vacation and found all the trees cut down

along my street. The city apparently decided to put in a different type of tree that will now take about 10 years to grow out and look decent. But even when we had the old trees, the city would come by every two years and cut them up into gumball shapes. They just cannot stand something looking beautiful and natural. I don't think American culture likes trees, but then they like idiotic green lawns that look like crap and use a lot of water. I guess the problem is me; I'm just completely out of step with American culture.

4. My sympathy

It does hurt to lose a tree. I had a beautiful oak in our front yard which died over the winter. It was 80-100 years old. Not only do I miss the tree but I miss the $1800 it cost to have it taken down.
