Bartok, Varese, Hindemith, Penderecki...
Charles Ives is my hero.
Olivier Messiaen was my favorite living composer. Got to see him in the flesh once-- Seiji Ozawa played a couple scenes from his opera on St. Francis of Assisi, and Messiaen was in the audience. (I think his wife played piano, and I know his sister-in-law played the Ondes Martenot, an archaic synthesizer he used in many of his scores.)
Pre-20th Century I like Beethoven and Debussy best.
