5. can't beat Beethoven
but also I love Wagner, Rimsky Korsakov, tchaikovsky, Puccini,Brahms both Strauss.

10. Love me some Stravinsky
Bartok, Varese, Hindemith, Penderecki...

Charles Ives is my hero.

Olivier Messiaen was my favorite living composer. Got to see him in the flesh once-- Seiji Ozawa played a couple scenes from his opera on St. Francis of Assisi, and Messiaen was in the audience. (I think his wife played piano, and I know his sister-in-law played the Ondes Martenot, an archaic synthesizer he used in many of his scores.)

Pre-20th Century I like Beethoven and Debussy best.

11. The Haydn - Mozart era is my first pick.
Followed by late 19th - early 20th century French composers.
