Personally I don't put too much credence on these sorts of things anyway. One of my best friends is a "convicted sex offender". His crime? He went to a club with another friend of ours and picked up a very attractive young woman, they all got toasted, and he ended up sleeping with her. When he woke up the next morning, the woman was gone.

Turned out, the "woman" was a very mature looking 16 year old girl who'd gotten into the club with a fake ID. The girl told one of her friends what had happened, the friend told her mother, and the mother responded by having charges filed against him (he was 24 at the time). He was convicted by a judge who felt that you should never sleep with someone unless you've met their parents, but the case was handed off to another judge for sentencing. That judge called his conviction a "travesty" and gave him the minimum sentence, 30 days in jail and six months probation.

All in all, it hasn't harmed him in any significant way EXCEPT that he now shows up on these lists. He's had a few problems because of it over the years (turned down for a few jobs, had a neighbor freak out on him once), but tries to downplay it for the most part.

The definition of "sex crime" varies from state to state, so make sure you're not villifying anyone until you know EXACTLY what they were actually convicted of.

I am most worried about the crimes committed against children. I think most of the guys listed are serious offenders. A guy in the situation you described is unfortunate but I don't think it is the norm. The same thing almost happened to a fraternity brother of mine in college until just before things got serious we found out from her friend that they were seniors at the local high school. She was 17.
