Who's read "Under the Banner of Heaven?"
I'm halfway through it. I picked it up after reading Krakauer's "Into Thin Air," his account of the 1996 Everest disaster.

Very, very interesting so far. What did you think?

1. I just picked that book up from the library yesterday.
I can hardly wait to read it -- I was surprised it wasn't on hold in the library. What do you think so far? I read "Into Thin Air" and found it disturbing and riveting.

2. I think it's really interesting.
Lots of unbiased reporting on mormonism and fanaticism in general, stuff I've never known before.

3. It was pretty good.
Krakauer does a good job of weaving the story together. The history of the Mormon church is interesting.

4. read it last summer
loved it. Krakauer is just an incredible story-teller.

The book was pretty disturbing. I think there's a public face of Mormonism that is quite different from the reality.

5. I have - it was fascinating, very well written
My mother's side of the family are all Mormons and my great-great aunt Vaddy was a second wife in a polygamous relationship. She and the first wife each had 12 kids with this guy. I met her when I went to Utah in 1976 with my mom and her parents.

My mother was excommunicated years ago, but many people in her family are really wonderful. They have been so kind and helpful to me since my husband died. I've received (yes...) several copies of the Book of Mormon, but the letters of hope and love and accompany them take away any freakishness I feel when I look at the book. There are many fine Mormon people, however, it's certainly not a religion I could ever find myself a part of.:hi:
