My poor dog hasn't been on a walk in a month
DAMN FIREWORKS!!! She's 4, and never used to be afraid of loud noises. When I put her harness & leash on, she starts shaking & panting like crazy. I can't even get her further than the front yard before she pulls back toward the house.

Thanks to my fellow DU'ers, I tried Rescue Remedy from Whole Foods, but that hasn't helped. I'm so sad for her, because her evening walks were one of her (and my) favorite activities.

1. tell a vet, that happened to my dog once, and they gave me
some kind of doggy valium that worked very well.

3. The vet prescribed some sedatives for her
We only gave them to her around the 4th when the fireworks were going non-stop.

4. Yes, I second this. I don't know personally about the Doggie Downers
but kitty quaaludes have worked for my two little dudes when unusual circumstance warrants.

2. Doggie Prozac?
Ask your vet.

I'm serious here.

6. training training
down stay in a scary situation, held for a short time, followed by her very, very, very favorite treat. then back in the house. just a short session. 5 minutes, max. i bet she;s over it in a week. it is so easy to reinforce fears. nothing like a couple of "poor baby, poor baby's" to ingrain a fearful reaction.

7. We're trying
I did get her halfway to the end of the block last week, but then she heard a "pop" and got scared again. We're trying baby steps, and she's pretty obedient & trained, for a beagle that is.

9. know what you mean
i've got 3 terriers. they were pretty worked up when the popping started. they are kinda over it now. but they are hyper monkey dogs.

10. Yep
I could tell my pup was unsure about loud thunder, so I started praising her every time it happened. Now she gets all frisky during a storm. Same trick worked for fireworks.

8. would this work ??
we have a forest trail that comes right up to our house but the woods are filled with coyotes ... our vet said we really shouldn't walk our pup there anymore ...

soooo, we get in the car and drive to a nearby park or a lake with a path around it ...

are there places you could take your dog that might be far enough away from fireworks? it might be easier to just walk from the house but a short drive shouldn't be a problem ...

i think my pup enjoys the ride in the car as much as the walk ...
