I'm glad that he under-funded the "No Child Left Behind" program. That program is a sad excuse at public education reform. The sooner that program dies, the sooner we can find something that will really help improve our schools.

What can Bush do for me in the near future that will bring me joy? I will rejoice to no end when Kerry defeats Bush in November's election. I cannot wait for the day that I see Bush leaving the White House with his tail between his legs. :hi:

it is really pathetic that this law is underfunded, because a lot of the things that teddy kennedy put in there are good.
i am on the nclb parent advisory council at my kids school. we get 1% of chapter one funds to spend on parent education and involvement. it would be all good if they had added 1% to the pot, but they didn't.
we also have to sign off on the use of all title 1 funds.
mostly it does suck, and is really intended to privatize the schools.

This is similar to a point raised by a couple of earlier posters. His liking for inappropriate jokes has taught me that there are different varieties of Republicans, and many of the traditional conservatives think he's crude and ill-mannered. Just by "being himself" he reveals how callous, greedy, and irresponsible his cabal is!


p.s. Do I like anything about the man himself? Well, I find myself focusing on his eyebrows when he talks, because they are far less objectionable to me than his smirk, or his smarmy voice. I suppose my favorite fictional Bush image is "Ranger George", though I realize that this is just as much an artificial character (script, wardrobe, etc.) as President Bartlet from "The West Wing".

He claims to like Larry McMurtry (and also various mystery writers) -- if he really does read those books, at least we would have something to discuss. That, and tree identification.

35. I thought and thought and finally remembered two

I LIKED the tax break and improved writeoffs for small businesses. I know many people here are adamantly against taxcuts of any kind, but I'd rather support small businesses over giant corporations any day, so any legislative assistance or tax relief that can help these smaller businesses flourish gets a pass in my book.

Small businesses always struggle to survive, moreso in a Bush economy, so I tend to support whatever supports them.

I also happen to agree with the invasion of Afghanistan (it certainly wasn't a popular opinion here at the time, though I know I'm not the only one). Whatever the history, Afghanistan had a government that vocally advocated the destruction of the U.S., actively murdered its own citizens for not being "Muslim enough", was primarily composed of non-Afghan Arab criminals who'd fled their own countries, and sheltered and offered willing haven to well known and admitted terrorist organizations. It's widely forgotten today, but we even offered to leave them alone if they'd just expel Al Queda and hand over its leaders, and they refused, point blank admitting that they supported Al Queda's goals. Unlike Iraq, I believe that Afghanistan was a justified military target, and that the nation is better off today than it was before the war.

...when he was standing on the rubble and the rescue worker handed him the bullhorn, walked away, and Bush said "where are you going," motioned him back, and put his arm around him.

If he had turned out to REALLY be that man...inside and out...if it wasn't a hollow P.R. sham...I tend to think that DU would primarily consist of The Lounge and a pantsload of "cute kitten" threads, but not a hell of a lot of Bush-bashing.

He was not that man. Or maybe, for that one brief moment, he WAS. But it didn't last.
