If I meet someone who calls me a "bright", I'll beat the hell out of them |
|
I am an atheist, not a bright. Bright is some bullshit, pat-yourself-on-the-back, sissy term that no proper human being would ever indulge.

3. It's what some people who are atheists like to call themselves |

6. Right. The same way I'm a Christian, |
|
not a "saint." I really loathe that self congradulating bullshit that you see, both from the more arrogant brand of Atheists and the smarmier Christians.

7. I agree that it's a dopey term, just |
|
told someone in GD it was the way to make atheists REALLY hated.
Saying "I'm a bright" implies "And you're a dumb shit theist who believes in something you can't see." Not helpful in furthering dialogue.
It really is, as has already been said, way too much like Christians who refer to themselves as "saved" or "saints."

...couldn't believe that this wasn't some fruity nightmare I was having when I first read about "bright."
Of all the names I've heard, the ones which sound more distinguished, someone chooses 'bright.'
It was supposed to be like the whole "gay" thing, to have a word which didn't have a negative conotation (like atheist) which you could call yourself.
And besides, "agnostic nontheist" sounds so much more dignified, although I still shorten that to atheist for clarification.

You'd think a group of people who consider themselves smarter than the average bear for being atheists would have realized that the term 'bright' is impossibly lame. Lame. LAME. I cringe every time I see it in print, and I think I'd probably die of embarrassment on behalf of someone who actually used it in conversation with me.
Call yourself a bright and you suck all the cool out of the room.
