WOOHOO!! Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) will be at my church Sun.
He will be receiving the Hero of Hope Award.

Our guest speaker during morning worship services on July 18 will be Congressman John Lewis (D-GA). Lewis is scheduled to receive Cathedral of Hope’s Hero of Hope Award as we kick off anniversary week.

Called “one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced,” Congressman Lewis was only 15 when he was first inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. At the age of 23, he was an architect of the now-famous “March on Washington” and one of the “Big Six” leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, a group that included Whitney Young, Roy Wilkins and Martin Luther King, Jr. Lewis is the last surviving speaker to have addressed the crowd gathered at the Lincoln Memorial on that historic day.

Despite more than 40 arrests, physical attacks and serious injuries, John Lewis remains a devoted advocate of the philosophy of nonviolence. He has served Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District, including Atlanta, since 1986. In March of this year, Lewis registered his opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Showing his belief in the dignity of all people, Lewis said, “I have fought too hard and too long against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up against discrimination based on same sex marriages.”

Please join us Sunday as we honor a true “Hero of Hope” and begin our Anniversary Celebration.

Blessings, The Staff and Board of the Cathedral of Hope
